resources
I intend for theses pages to offer a growing body of resources that may be of interest to others. In some way each thing has enriched and guided my life and work. The resources will include texts, poems, interesting quotes, websites, exhibitions and events etc. I have begun this resources page with some interesting quotes.
quotes
on art
'Art cannot be understood through the intellect, but is felt through an emotion presenting some analogy with a religious faith or a sexual attraction, an aesthetic echo.'
'The 'victim' of an aesthetic echo is in a position comparable to that of a man in love, or of a believer, who dismisses automatically his demanding ego and, helpless, submits to a pleasurable and mysterious constraint. While exercising his taste, he adopts a commanding attitude. When touched by the aesthetic revelation, the same man, in an almost ecstatic mood, becomes receptive and humble.' Marcel Duchamp, West Coast Duchamp
on awareness
'Awareness is very important. We are here, nowhere else. Since we are here, why not be here?' Chogyam Trungpa
on buddhism and art
At the fourth meeting of the Awake consortium, Buddhist activist Joanna Macy described Engaged Buddhism as the application of the teachings of the Buddha...
'...to our current situation through understanding our true interdependent nature, through affirming this understanding and schooling it through our behaviour; right action, right effort, right livelihood, right speech and through de-conditioning our minds through mental practice.'Jacqueline Baas and Mary Jane Jacobp.23 preface to 'Buddha Mind in Contemporary Art'
'If we're really engaged in mindfulness while painting...then we will consider the act of each mark
(each movement) we make as an infinite
wonder, and a joy will open our hearts like a flower, enabling us to enter the world of reality.' Thich Nhat Hang
"Buddhism's capacity to embody values of compassion through its view of the interdependence of beings with each other and within nature, along with its ability to co-exist with other religions - enhancing our tools for life rather than splitting us apart - seems compelling for our times." Jacqueline Baas and Mary Jane Jacob p.11 preface to 'Buddha Mind in Contemporary Art'
